New York City Girl

Some (not all) things I have learned while living in New York for the past eight weeks:

1. There is no time like rush hour by Penn Station. Rules are nonexistent at 5:30 on 7th Ave. People flood into the streets.

2. Aggressive walking is a way of life--there is no in between.

3. Indecisiveness is a bitch, especially when walking home from work hungry. WHAT SHOULD I EAT FOR DINNER? Maybe Joe's Pizza. No definitely Dos Toros. UGH just buy some chicken, you need to save money. BLerG you win. Scrambled egg burrito it is.

4. Having a student ID will get you many a discount. @vivisbubbletea @cooperhewittmuseum
You the real MVP, New School.

5. It IS possible to get sick of your never ending Spotify playlist, and it WILL happen.  But itsokay because Podcasts are really cool and the perfect length for the morning commute.

6. Museums are often better visited alone. Way more contemplative that way.

7. Strand bookstore might actually be one of my favorite places in the city. It's always chaotic, but reassuringly so.

8. No, I take that back because Bryant Park is my fave. Reading in BP is my favorite thing to do after work on a nice day, but don't let the immaculate green lawn distract you from all the creeps trying to hit on girls reading books. Dude, me reading a book is SO not an invitation for you to harass me. Was my furrowed brow not enough of a hint?

9. RUN, don't walk for that Q train. The express ride is well worth it, and sometimes even nice strangers will sacrifice their strong forearms for your sake.

10. I <3 NY and I'm not afraid to say it. Thanks for welcoming me into your noise and splendor.

~things I like~

^^ View from the Tip of Manhattan from the Staten Island Ferry // The book "IT," by Alexa Chung, taken at Strand. Idk but I like this quote and I feel like a true NYCG wouldn't fux wit these boys. But yet, even though she doesn't care and takes that risk anyways, she still ends up crying into her granola because boys will be boyz. Such is life.

You don't have to get it, just think on it.

I Woke Up Like This

Welp. I'm officially a working girl. You know the kind that rises early on some days, sleeps late on others, and drinks a tub load of coffee everyday. Not too bad, eh?

But really, my job is ah-mazing and I have found out that I enjoy the behind-the-scenes of retail as much as I love shopping. Okay that's pretty misleading since I get to do both on a daily basis. Are we sure my job description didn't include being the #1 shopper? Because that's what I've become...I see what you did there corporate...

But all that aside, I've seemed to regain my master outfitting talents that took a brief hiatus during my freshman year. It's refreshing, really, to be forced have to pick out complete outfits everyday, because it's what I love to do most. I get a daily reminder of what I'm passionate about which I tend to overlook while I'm at school. Some well deserved "me" time (whatever that really means.)

Yeah I'm a dweeb, I know. But hey, at least I'm a well-dressed one right?

The One in Which Caro Tries to Get to the Bottom of It

I always hated the thought of having to wear a uniform to school everyday. Never would I want to be restricted by some sort of sartorial rule book determined by old-ladies concerned with modesty and repressing individuality. Thankfully I was never subject to this form of fashionista torture. However, I have recently been introduced to the collegiate uniform. Every Betty Co-ed seems to don the same clothes day-in day-out, differing only from a mandated school uniform by the price tag.

What has caused these girls to slump back into that sad state of uniformity and uninspired outfits?

It seems odd to me that here, it is fashionable to dress like you just came from the gym all the time. No, sorry, it's fashionable to dress like you came from a New England gym and only could find your dad's XXL faded tee, collegiate baseball cap, $500 jacket, designer leggings, and heavy duty Bean Boots. But I digress, I'm not here to "hate" on the nonsensical way some University students dress, but merely to comment on style in today's media relient culture and obsession over trends, or what I like to call them, "not so trendy trends."

So what happened?

I'm here to dissect and discuss what causes shifts in the way people dress.

I'm here to get down to the bottom of personal style.

What does it mean? How individual is it really? Is there ever really a new way to wear something?

I will forever be interested in finding new ways to express myself through my style, so stay tuned to see how Caro is Coming of Age.

And no worries, I'm not going to try to cleverly come up with some new Friends heading every day. I'm just trying to get your culture-obsessed mind's attention duh.
